Selecting The Correct Power Of Reading Glasses
Did you know it is a myth that wearing the wrong power pair of readers can hurt your eyes? Many will try to tell you that wearing glasses will actually weaken your eyes. The good news is that nothing can be further from the truth. Glasses simply bend light so a viewed object will come in to focus properly on the back of your eye.
When we need a pair of readers, it generally means that Presbyopia has set in. Presbyopia is believed to stem from a gradual thickening as well as loss of flexibility of the crystalline lens which resides on the inside your eye.
These changes that occur are very gradual and absolutely age related. In fact, the changes start to happen when we are very young, it just seems to catch up with our ability to focus at near around the young age of 40. The accumulation of mass and proteins in the lens end up making the lens harder and less elastic. Age-related changes also take place in the muscle fibers surrounding the lens. It is the combination of these two effects that cause the symptoms of presbyopia.
Because the crystalline lens is like our own personal auto-focuser, as it gets a little less elastic we lose range of focus.
When it comes to readers, they are all plus (+) power, usually between +1.00 and +3.00 and available in quarter diopter (0.25) steps. Plus power lenses simply magnify an object to make it appear larger. The effect for those of us who are presbyopic (over 40 years young) this helps us to focus on the small print.
Putting on a pair of readers simply changes your range of focus from distance vision to near vision. If your eye is still able to auto adjust, there is no need for readers. As you slightly lose the ability to change focus, welcome to the world of +1.00 to +1.50 readers. As the years go on, the higher powers will be needed because the range of focus has decreased more.
So, what if you wear a pair of readers that is too weak? Nothing bad will happen, but probably nothing that great either. The lower powers will only bring in a small range of focus. You will find that lower power readers work great for objects that are a little further away or larger. A lower power works great for computer work, as an example.
So, what if you wear a pair of reading glasses that are too strong? Again, nothing bad will happen. Higher powers will magnify more and leave you with a smaller range of focus. So, if you only need a +1.50 and you put on a pair of +3.00′s, the font you are looking at will look nice and big as long as you hold it closer to your eyes. It may look great at first but will not be very comfortable. And if you wear a pair that is too strong and try to do computer work you will probably have a hard time seeing the monitor clearly. The range of focus is too short.
General rule of thumb: Go with the lowest power that you can still see comfortably. This will allow you to read and still work on the computer. If you want a pair that is strictly for reading (no computer work) you may want them +.25 to +.50 stronger than your general work pair. The same goes true for a pair you travel to dinner with. The dim lights bring your range of focus down a notch.
Overall, go with what you are comfortable with. Here a couple suggestions:
