Do you know what power reading glasses you need?
Reading Glasses Range In Power From +1.00 to +3.00
readers are measured by power of magnification, known as a diopter. In general, the lowest of low power reading glasses you will find is a +1.00 (pronounced, “plus one”). The need for reading glasses starts around the young age of 40 for just about anyone, regardless of their previous vision throughout childhood and adolescence.
To make it easy, here is a link to a handy reading glasses eye chart. Just open the pdf and follow the directions.
Some general rules of thumb when selecting your power of reading glasses:
- If you just started noticing you need reading glasses, start with a +1.00.
- Add a half diopter for every 4-5 years you have been wearing reading glasses:
age: 38 – 43 +1.00
age: 43 – 47 +1.50
age: 48 – 53 +2.00
etc.. - The higher the magnification, the closer you will have to hold your reading material to see it clearly. This means for computer users, you might want a slightly lower power than you might use to comfortably read the newspaper. (that’s why we make them in .25 powers.)
And most of all get what you are comfortable reading in. If you are not satisfied with the power selection you made, simply let us know and we will gladly exchange your reading glasses for a more suitable pair.
